O'Connor Dowse was the first company I worked for
We created these images entirely on film, in the enlarger
First we would copy the two photos onto film, in position
Then put a rubylith mask on top & cut around the object with a tiny knife
Twice - once for the foreground, once for the background
Each element would then be exposed through its mask onto new film
We were left with a white channel to fill in round the object with dyes
If we made a mistake, it was back to the enlarger to start again...
